The 140-Year Journey to Recognition

From 1885 to 2025, we never gave up. This item celebrates our history, our persistence, and our victory.

Year

Why This Date is Essential

1885

North Carolina officially recognizes the tribe as “Croatan Indians” – the very first time a government admitted we were a tribe. Big thanks to State legislator Mr. Hamilton McMillan

“1885 – First State Recognized”

1888

The tribe asks the U.S. Congress for help and recognition for the first time. This started the long fight with the federal government.

“1888 – We Asked Congress”

1956

The Lumbee Act is passed. The federal government admitted we were Indians but unfairly said we could not have any benefits or support.

“1956 – Named but Denied”

1989

The government said the only way to fix the unfair 1956 law was for Congress to pass a new one.

“1989 – Only Congress Can Fix It”

2007

The House passes H.R. 65. The House had voted "yes" before (in 1991 and 1993), but those bills died out. This victory started the new wave of support.

“2007 – House Passed H.R. 65”

2024

The House passed the Lumbee Fairness Act for the third time in a row. This showed that support for the tribe was stronger than ever.

“2024 – Closest Yet”

2025

The President signs a Presidential Memorandum. This was the first time in history a President gave a direct legal order to help the Lumbee Tribe get full recognition.

“Jan 2025 – First Presidential Directive”

2025

After 140 years of trying, our people, the Lumbee Tribe finally wins FULL federal recognition.

“Dec 2025 – VICTORY”

The “Pinecone Patchwork” derives its name from the longleaf pinecone, when looking at the bottom of a pinecone you can find this design.  Our elders of the past and present weave these beautiful designs in quilts while hosting quilting bee’s in their communities. Henry Berry Lowrey's daughter, Maggie hand made a quilt using the Pinecone Patchwork design. Hayes A. Locklear, artist and historian and Kat Littleturtle were inspired by the quilt and designed and made a southern style dress for Natasha Wagner a former Miss Indian World in 1993. Today our Lumbee Princesses wear the Pinecone Patchwork insignia on their traditional regalias during Pow-wows across the Nation. In 2000 Cyna's Jewelers fashioned the Pinecone Patchwork into contemporary jewelry with the idea that all people could wear a piece of Lumbee history. This beautiful design has become a symbol that has helped revitalize the rich heritage of the Lumbee people. Robeson County, North Carolina is the “Land of the Lumbee.”

Preserving our heritage through our jewelry.
