Enrolled in the Lumbee Tribe and of Tuscarora descent, she has been actively involved in the American Indian Movement (AIM) since the age of six, when she participated in the historic 1972 takeover of the Bureau of Indian Affairs alongside her grandfather, Henry Brooks. Shifflett has dedicated her legal career to advancing Native sovereignty and justice. She served as a Majority Staff Attorney for the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and began working professionally with AIM co-founder Dennis Banks in 2016. Shifflett has also stood at Standing Rock in protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
