This item  celebrates our history, our persistence, and our victory.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“\u003cstrong\u003e1885\u003c\/strong\u003e – First State Recognized” North Carolina officially recognizes the Indians of Robeson County as “Croatan Indians,”  the very first time any government admitted we were Indians\/\u003cspan\u003eindigenous\u003c\/span\u003e. Championed by State Representative Hamilton McMillan, the act also laid the groundwork for the Croatan Normal School (founded in 1887), today known as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. 1885 is what made 1888 possible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“\u003cstrong\u003e1888\u003c\/strong\u003e – We Asked Congress” The tribe asks the U.S. Congress for help and recognition for the first time. This started the long fight with the  federal government.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“\u003cstrong\u003e1956\u003c\/strong\u003e – Named but Denied” The Lumbee Act is passed. The federal government  recognized we were Indians\/\u003cspan\u003eindigenous\u003c\/span\u003e but unfairly said we could not have any benefits or support.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“\u003cstrong\u003e1989\u003c\/strong\u003e – Only Congress Can Fix It” The government said the only way to fix the unfair 1956 law was for Congress to pass a new one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“\u003cstrong\u003e2007\u003c\/strong\u003e – House Passed H.R. 65” The House passes H.R. 65, but denied in the Senate. This victory started the new wave of support.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“\u003cstrong\u003e2024\u003c\/strong\u003e – Closest Yet” The House passed the Lumbee Fairness Act for the third time in a row.
